Buying a Dirt Bike, ATV, or Scooter Online in Mississippi: What to Expect from Checkout to First Ride
Buying a dirt bike, ATV, or scooter online can save you real money, and you don't have to drive to a dealer an hour or two away. But a vehicle that shows up on a freight truck isn't the same as one you pick up at a showroom. A little planning makes the difference between a great first ride and a frustrating week.
This guide walks you through delivery, assembly, Mississippi's rules for riding, and what to check before you ever turn the key.
How delivery works
Mississippi powersports vehicles are too big and heavy for regular parcel shipping, so they usually arrive by freight carrier. Here's what that means for you:
-
Allow roughly two to three weeks. Our delivery estimate for Mississippi is 7 to 10 business days, and the Ready to Ride option adds about 5 business days. Holiday weeks can add another 3 to 5.
-
An adult has to be there. Someone 18 or older needs to be present to inspect the delivery and sign for it.
-
Inspect before you sign. Look over the crate and the vehicle while the driver is still there. If anything is damaged or missing, write it on the packing slip before signing, and take photos or video.
-
Report problems fast. Damage or missing parts need to be reported within 2 business days.
-
Rural addresses can be tricky. Freight trucks can't always reach every address, so call us if you live down a long gravel road or in a remote area, and we'll check before you order.
The delivery truck is a big one. Think about where it can turn around and where you'll unload.
Assembly: ready to ride or some assembly required
Some vehicles ship partly assembled, and you'll need to attach things like the handlebars, front wheels, and mirrors. Others are available as Ready to Ride, where we do the setup before shipping.
If you're handy with a wrench and have a free afternoon, assembling it yourself is straightforward. If you'd rather skip the work, or you're buying a gift and want it right the first time, pick the Ready to Ride option and build in the extra days.
Before the first ride: a quick checklist
Whether it's brand new or fully assembled, don't skip this part.
-
Oil and fuel. Confirm the engine has the right oil and fuel before you start it, and follow the break-in steps in the owner's manual.
-
Tires. Check the pressure against the sidewall or the sticker on the vehicle.
-
Brakes and throttle. Squeeze the levers and make sure the throttle snaps back when you let go.
-
Bolts and fasteners. Go over the wheels, handlebars, and footpegs and make sure everything is tight.
-
Lights and controls. Test headlights, taillights, and kill switch if your model has them.
-
Set the limiter. Many youth models have a throttle limiter. Set it low for a new rider.
Know the return policy before you buy
This is the part many buyers miss, so read it first. Once you sign for the delivery, the sale is final, and a vehicle that has been fueled or ridden can't be returned. Approved returns carry a restocking fee of 20% to 35%, and the buyer pays return shipping.
So decide carefully before you order. Check the rider's height and weight against the manufacturer's specs, confirm the size is right for your child's age and experience, and call us if you're not sure.
Mississippi rules for riding
What you can do with the vehicle depends on whether it's built for the street or for off-road use.
Scooters and street motorcycles
In Mississippi, the law counts motor scooters as motorcycles. That means you need a Mississippi driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement to ride one. There's a narrow exception for short-term rentals in a college town, with a 30 mph speed cap and a 35 mph road limit, but it doesn't apply to an owner riding their own scooter.
A few more things to plan for:
-
Helmet. Mississippi requires riders on motorcycles and motor scooters to wear an approved helmet. Look for the DOT label.
-
Registration and tag. A street-legal scooter or motorcycle needs to be registered and have a license plate before it goes on public roads.
-
Paperwork. Ask the seller what documents come with the vehicle, and check with the Mississippi Department of Revenue about what it needs to title and register it.
The endorsement requirement applies whether you pick a 50cc or a 150cc, so it's worth getting even if you start small.
ATVs and dirt bikes
Mississippi Powersport`s off-road vehicle law covers ATVs, dirt bikes, and similar vehicles. In general, to ride one on public property, you need a valid driver's license, or, if you're under 16, you need a crash helmet and a certificate from an approved off-road vehicle safety course. The law also states that it doesn't authorize riding off-road vehicles on public roads or highways.
The simplest approach is to keep ATVs and dirt bikes on private land with the owner's permission, or at a designated riding area, and to make sure every rider has a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection.
Picking the right size
Size matters more than age. A child should be able to touch the ground, reach the handlebars comfortably, and work the brakes and throttle without stretching. If you're buying for a young rider, start with a smaller automatic model and move up as their skills grow. Browse our ATVs, dirt bikes, and scooters, and motorcycles and compare engine sizes and rider ratings.
